Fall is upon us and the hunting seasons are starting to open.
At this point Bear, Goose, Morning Dove, Snipe and Rail are open, There are some geese flying at this time but the numbers I’m seeing seem a little lighter than this time last year, but them not as much corn has been cut for silage yet. In this area you can shoot up to 5 per day with the early season license and the license is only $4.00 along with your regular licenses. The Goose population is very high and the numbers do need reducing. Just remember steel shot or non-toxic shot only. I have been using 2 ¾” # 2 steel shot and the birds have been dead when they hit the ground.
With the heat we have been having the Morning Doves have not flown south yet. (But it won’t be long) The little dove is quite tasty but it takes several for a meal. The meat has a very mild flavor not far from wood duck and very easy to clean. I like to use either a 20 or 28 gauge semi-auto or double for dove. Number 7 shot is a good choice. The dove is a fast flyer and you will need a good lead. If you are hunting in an area with long grass or crops find your down bird before you shoot the next one of it will be very hard to locate.
Get out and be safe.
