Alcohol Involved In 4-Vehicle Crash That Killed Minnesota Woman: MSP

The fatal crash occurred after a vehicle began going the wrong way down Interstate 90 in southern Minnesota, according to authorities.

A 21-year-old woman is dead following a crash involving four vehicles that occurred on Interstate 90 in southern Minnesota just before 8 p.m. Tuesday.

The driver of the 2006 Honda CR-V, Mark Jason Wendland, 48, is suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol. Wendland is from Baltic, South Dakota.

The Minnesota State Patrol (MSP) reported that Wendland was driving the Honda CR-V the wrong way down I-90, going westbound in the eastbound lanes, and struck a 2011 Ford Escape that was traveling eastbound.

A 2013 Mack 600 was also eastbound on I-90 and began pull over onto the shoulder.

A third vehicle, a 2016 Kenworth diesel, was eastbound as well and moved into the left lane to pass the Mack.

The Kenworth came upon the crash scene, swerved to the right, and lightly side swiped the Honda CR-V and ran into the back of the Mack.

Both the Kenworth and the Mack ended up in the ditch, according to MSP. The incident took place in Martin County's Fraser Township.

Hannah Elizabeth Stoesz, 21, was a passenger in the Ford Escape when she died in the crash. Stoesz was not wearing her seatbelt, according to MSP. The status of the driver of the Ford Escape, Tyler James Schoborg, 19, has not yet been reported.

Schoborg was transported to St Mary's Hospital in Rochester, according to MSP.

Wendland suffered non-life threatening injuries, while neither semi drivers suffered injuries in the crash.

The Martin County Sheriff's Office and the Minnesota Department of Transportation assisted in the crash response.
