Miah Detjen of Northfield, is a sophomore majoring in Film Production and minoring in Writing at Minnesota State University - Moorhead. She has been awarded Best Non-Fiction Film from MSUM's Cinema Arts & Digital Technologies Department at their Juried Film Exhibition for her film, "Daddy" on December 14th, 2012. After screening over 20 films, Miah's film was recognized as the best non-fiction film.
The documentary is a glimpse into her life growing up with a deaf father and the two worlds (hearing and deaf) that she interacts with. "Daddy" is a unique and touching film that effects a hearing audience by letting them experience what a deaf person may experience during a film. Through her use of American Sign Language, which is subtitled, and use of very little sound within the film, the silent, but beautiful language is impactful when the glimpse into her life is suddenly locked shut at the end of the film.
Miah looks forward to submitting her film to the Fargo Film Festival and hopes to add to her work. Miah Detjen is a 2011 Northfield High School Graduate. She is the daughter of Michael and Paula Detjen of Northfield.
