Community Action Center Offering Free Cell Phones

The Community Action Center is working again with Free Phone Minnesota to help eligible households receive a free cell phone with 250 free minutes each month.  There are no contracts, activation charges, or monthly fees.  Staff of Free Phone Minnesota will be at the Community Resource Center, Room 104, on Tuesday, January 22, from 11:00 until 4:00 to enroll interested individuals.  Phones will be distributed on January 22 and are limited to one per household.

To receive a phone, a government-issued picture ID and proof of participation in an assistance program is required.  Participation in any of the programs listed is accepted as proof of income eligibility:  Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF); Supplemental Security Income statement (SSI); Food support (bring your EBT card); Medicaid card; Section 8 or public housing program; free lunch program enrollment; low-income home energy assistance program; prrof of household income below 135% of the federal poverty level.

CAC staff is available to answer questions and assist with paperwork.  Appointments are required on January 22 and can be scheduled by calling the Community Action Center at 507-664-3550.  Phones are provided by Life Wireless, a program of Lifeline.
