ABOUT THE ORIGINAL STORY
The original story was written by Valentine Davies in the 1940s. He wrote the outline for Miracle on 34th Street while in the Coast Guard in 1944. Disillusioned with the commercialization of Christmas, he wondered ‘what would happen if a real Santa Claus walked into a department store in December.’ His novella was published in 1947 and has become a household title popularized by the film versions in 1947 and 1994 as well as the theatrical play and musical.
ABOUT THE BOOK, MUSIC, LYRICS
Meredith Willson, of The Music Man fame, had originally titled the production, Here’s Love. The title changed to Miracle on 34th Street, The Musical so that audiences would recognize the familiar story by name. The popular holiday song “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” debuted in the musical, with music and lyrics written by Willson.
