Carleton Professor Scott Carpenter to Read at the Northfield Public Library

Scott Carpenter, a professor at Carleton will
speak and read from his novel,  The
Theory of Remainders,
at the Northfield Public Library on Thursday,
November 7, at 7:00 p.m.    Scott  teaches French literature, literary theory,
and cross-cultural studies at Carleton. He is a  specialist of nineteenth-century
literature  in addition to writing  fiction.

The novel is set in both Boston and France.  The main character, Philip Adler, a
psychiatrist, receives an emergency phone call during a frustrating session
with a teenage girl, and hears that his former mother-in-law has died.  He makes the difficult decision to go to
France for the funeral, where he must face his former wife and the memories of
their murdered daughter.  An intriguing
series of events follows his landing in Paris, and readers will be unable to
put the novel down.  The author reading
is free and open to the public.
