City: Get Ready For Seal Coating Projects

As part of the City of Northfield, Street Division’s preventative maintenance program, a seal coating project has been scheduled to begin on or about June 6, 2011 and should be completed within approximately one week. This work is very dependent upon weather and could very easily be delayed due to small amounts of rain.

Seal coating consists of spraying a heavy bituminous (oil) material on the street surface then covering it with small aggregate (rock) material, rolling the combination of bituminous and aggregate and finally sweeping up excess aggregate. Seal coating is done to increase the life span of the existing bituminous street surface.

During the project, residents are urged to drive slowly through the construction area and avoid driving through any areas where bituminous material has been sprayed and not covered with aggregate. During the bituminous lay-down phase of the project, the Street Division is requesting that residents do not park on the streets scheduled to be seal coated. Streets will be posted with temporary no parking signs in advance of seal coating.
