Community Services presents The Last Keeper at Split Rock

In July 2010, Split Rock Lighthouse celebrated its centennial year as a historical beacon along Minnesota’s North Shore.  This month, residents of Northfield will get an opportunity to meet the last keeper who turned off the light at this iconic landmark at the end of the 1968-69 shipping season.  Former keeper, officer and author Mike Roberts, will share some of his enthralling stories about life and work at the lighthouse, how folks made ends meet on the North Shore and more on Lake Superior lore, as well as his personal search and rescue experiences in the U.S. Coast Guard.  Also learn more details on how the John Morrel went down and the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

This event promises to be a captivating, personal glimpse into the history of one of the most photographed navigational aid sites in the country.  The event cost is $15 per adult and $10 per student and will take place from 7 – 8:30 p.m. in the Northfield High School Auditorium, on Thursday, July 18.  Please visit www.nfld.k12.mn.us (follow the Community Services link) or call 507.664.3649 for more information or to register.  Although registration is encouraged, tickets will also be available to purchase at the door.

Northfield Public Schools Community Services includes recreation and enrichment programming, Early Childhood Family Education, driver education, KidVentures, EarlyVentures Learning Center, Connected Kids, Middle School Youth Center, Hand-in-Hand Preschool, Adult Basic Education and Project ABLE.
