American Indian Criminal Justice Expert Steve Russell to Present Carleton College Convocation

Steve Russell, an associate professor of criminal justice at Indiana University and an expert on American Indian identity, will deliver Carleton College’s convocation address on Friday, Nov. 4. Russell’s presentation, entitled “Race and Citizenship Inside and Outside the Cherokee Nation,” will look at the recent controversy over the status within the Cherokee Nation of freedmen (the descendents of slaves held by Cherokee Indians). Convocation is held from 10:50-11:50 a.m. in the Skinner Memorial Chapel, and is free and open to the public.
