Increasing diversity and the need for effective public policies to integrate immigrants has been at the forefront of debates in Europe for over a decade. The influence of populist political parties and the impact of the 22nd of July 2011 terrorist attacks will be explored. A critical question is: can public policy contribute to the accommodation of diversities in such a manner that enable all to share a common political space? Educated as a political scientist at the University of Melbourne, Australia, Szlachetko is currently a senior advisor at the Norwegian Directorate of Integration and Diversity.
