Welcome to the first blog for Carleton’s Center for Community and Civic Engagement – affectionately known as the CCCE or Trip-CE. The CCCE coordinates and encourages Carleton student learning through community partnerships. We do this by supporting volunteer programs, academic civic engagement, and faculty scholarship for the public good. In case you haven’t heard of us before, we’ll explain who we are and what we do.
Located in Sayles Hill Campus Center 150, the CCCE is home to seven professional staff members and 20 paid student Fellows who support 61 volunteer program directors coordinating 29 volunteer programs. Each year, Carleton students contribute thousands of volunteer hours to the local community. You might have heard of us because of the tutoring and outreach we do with Northfield and Faribault youth, or because of the recent Northfield News post about Gleaning, or maybe you or someone you know worked with one of our programs.
Carleton has a long history of community partnerships. In 1985, Carleton began ACT (Acting in the Community Together). In 1993, the student position which we now call “Fellows” was created. In 1997 the Center expanded with the creation of the Northfield Reads and Counts program. In 2000, Carleton received a service learning grant which paved the way towards the creation of ACE (Academic Civic Engagement) in 2009; our community-based learning courses are extremely popular to this day. During the spring of 2011, ACT, ACE, and Public Scholarship merged to create the CCCE, a department in Carleton’s Dean of College Office.

This brings us to today! The Center focuses on five main issue areas: Community Development, Education, Food and Sustainability, Health, and Political Engagement. The College offers multiple ACE courses each term and over 50% of Carleton students participate in some kind of community engagement.
Starting this year, our students will post about their own experiences, drawing from a huge range of areas and programs. Check our blog to get updates about what our Center does and a sneak peek of the awesome stuff our students are doing! And stay tuned for our 2013 Newsletter!
