The Highway 3 reconstruction project is inching closer to Northfield.
On Tuesday afternoon, a flagger was stopping traffic on Highway 3 near Dahle Avenue, south of Northfield. Crews there were installing new guardrails.
For the past several weeks, road crews have applied a layer of asphalt to the two-lane highway, repaired shoulders and fixed guardrails on Highway 3 from Faribault north to the Cannon River bridge, just south of Dundas.
Road construction signs have been in place in Northfield since early May, when the project kicked off. Since then, though, construction crews in Northfield have been concentrating on repairing and replacing curbs and sidewalks at the intersections of Woodley Street, Jefferson Parkway and Honeylocust Drive.
Towers of cones have been standing at the ready for placement in Northfield for several days.
Here is a press release from the Minnesota Department of Transportation about the Highway 3 project:
Motorists can expect single-lane traffic on Highway 3 between Faribault and Northfield beginning Monday, May 6, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
The closures are necessary as crews resurface the road and make pedestrian accessibility improvements.
Flaggers will control traffic throughout the project, which is scheduled to continue through late June, weather permitting.
When the project is complete, motorists will experience a smoother ride surface and a safer highway.
MnDOT urges motorists to always drive with caution, slow down in work zones and never enter a road blocked with barriers or cones.
