Highway 63 Will Get New Speed Limit In Southern Minnesota

MINNESOTA — Motorists using Highway 63 from the Iowa border to Lake City will see segments of the two-lane portion of highway increase from 55 mph to 60 mph this week as crews post the new signs, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

The new speed limits become official once the new signs are in place. MnDOT crews are posting the signs beginning Tuesday, weather permitting. Motorists should be alert for crews, who are replacing the signs along the shoulders of the road.

The work on Highway 63 covers the Iowa border north to Spring Valley, the junction of Hwy 16 north to Stewartville and 75th Street north of Rochester north to Lake City. Other portions of the road are four-lane and subject to other speed limits, according to a news release.

The speed limit study and changes have been occurring since 2014 when the Minnesota Legislature directed MnDOT to evaluate its two-lane, two-way 55 mph highways to determine whether speed limits could reasonably and safely be increased.

Additional highways in southeastern Minnesota are expected to be posted 60 mph during this season.

Motorists might see MnDOT sign crews posting the signs along the highways now or later this season as other roadways become approved for the new 60 mph speed limit. MnDOT urges motorists to always be attentive, drive with caution, slow down in work zones and never enter a road blocked with barriers or cones.
