Northfield Doesn't Need Another Ice Rink: Study

A market study found there wouldn't be enough to demand to justify a new arena in Northfield.

The city of Northfield does not need another community ice rink, according to a recent study conducted by BallardKing & Associates.

Jeff King discussed the finds of the market study at a Northfield City Council meeting, saying that while there is expected growth in hockey and skating in the area, there still won't be enough to demand to justify a new arena, Northfield News reported:

The study indicates that while Northfield Hockey Association is renting about 111 hours of ice time outside Northfield per year, indicating there is some demand for more local ice time, the need falls well short of justifying the costs for the operation and capital involved in a second rink.
Primary ice options in Northfield are now limited to the Northfield Ice Arena and to the proposed St. Olaf College arena. The latter had plans for a new rink, and the market study was intended to find if a second community rink would be required.
