Northfield Gets Back to Normal After Snowstorm Disrupts Morning Routines

Schools were closed, electric was out and tree limbs were down.

Northfield residents were getting back to normal Thursday afternoon after a freakish May snowstorm played havoc with residents’ routines.

The storm left residents without electricity, students without classes and trees without limbs.

The National Weather Service says 6.8 inches of snow fell in Northfield between Wednesday night and Thursday morning. The winter storm warning issued for the city expired at 1 p.m.

Taking a glimpse at the storm:

  • Xcel Energy says more than 700 homes lost electricity in Northfield and Dundas. According to power provider’s website, that number was reduced to less than 100 by 1 p.m., and those residents were expected to be back on line sometime today.
  • Northfield students got their second snow day in the last two weeks—and the third of the school year—on Thursday. Click here to read more about policies relating to school closures in the Northfield Public Schools.
  • Dozens of tree limbs were reported down throughout the city. Especially hard hit were two large trees in front of Sibley Elementary School.
  • The City of Northfield did not declare a snow emergency. There will be snow removal on Division Street between 12 midnight and 6 a.m. Friday morning, though.

The storm didn't keep Northfielders down for long, however. By early Thursday afternoon, children and their parents were out sledding on two popular hills—at St. Olaf College and Sibley Elementary—and residents were packing Division Street restaurants and coffee shops for lunch.
