Northfield Marriott Construction To Begin Next Week

NORTHFIELD, MN — After receiving final approval by the Northfield City Council Tuesday, construction on the Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriott is expected to begin next week. The Fairfield Inn is set to be built at 114 E Second St. near the Cannon River in Northfield.

City officials, developers, and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources had long discussions on how to deal with possible floods near the property, Northfield News reported:

The building and its contents will be protected from flooding as the design elevations of the site/building exceed the base flood elevation (BFE) by 2 feet in most places with the lone exception being a portion of the south parking lot.

“The south end of the hotel is where the entrance to the underground parking is located,” a city staff memo reads. “This area is designed in such a manner (e.g. flood proofed foundation walls around the ramp) that minimizes the effort needed to effectively protect the building from flood waters equal to or less than the 500-year flood event. If such an event occurs, minimal sandbagging will protect the structure from being inundated.”
