Northfield Police Warn Of Potentially Fatal Drug

The drug has caused three overdoses in the city in the last three days, authorities said.

NORTHFIELD, MN — Police are warning residents of a potentially fatal drug believed to be responsible for three overdoses in Northfield in the last three days. The drug has been purchased illegally as "Oxy" in a small, round, blue pill with "K 9" stamped into it, authorities said.

"Oxy" is a common nickname for Oxycontin or Oxycodone, or Percocet, which are opioid based pain medications. Police suspect these pills have been manufactured to look like real Oxycodone pills but it is unknown what they actually contain.

  • On Friday police responded to a report of two unresponsive adults. EMS administered multiple doses of naloxone. Both victims were transported to the Northfield Hospital and have recovered.
  • On Sunday, EMS responded to a report of an unresponsive man; they administered naloxone, transported the victim to the hospital and he recovered.

In both cases, "greater than the usual" doses of naloxone were required to revive the victims, police said. All three victims ingested the unknown "K 9" pill, according to authorities.
