Northfield School District Receives $9K Grant from Minnesota Historical Society

Independent School District #659 will use the funds to write its own story, from start to finish.

The Minnesota Historical Society recently announced that it would giveΒ Independent School District #659Β  a $9,000 grant to hire a consultant to research and writeΒ the history of Northfield public schools.

The money comes from a program called theΒ Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grants, which is funded byΒ a legislative appropriation of Β $11.2 million. Over 50 organizations around the state were listed asΒ recipients last week.Β 

The school district was in good company. Three other grants will be disbursed to Rice County organizations. TheΒ Northfield Historical Society received two, each amounting to almost $10,000. One will be used to digitize documents from 36 NorthfieldΒ­ civic organizations, which will then beΒ available to theΒ public viaΒ the Northfield History Collaborative. The NHS will use theΒ second grant to process its collections backlog.

The Rice County Historical Society also landed a $9,800 windfall to research and document the life ofΒ philanthropist Evangeline Marrs Whipple, who spent 14 years in Minnesota.Β
