Northfield School District Receives $9K Grant from Minnesota Historical Society

The Minnesota Historical Society recently announced that it would give Independent School District #659  a $9,000 grant to hire a consultant to research and write the history of Northfield public schools.

The money comes from a program called the Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grants, which is funded by a legislative appropriation of  $11.2 million. Over 50 organizations around the state were listed as recipients last week. 

The school district was in good company. Three other grants will be disbursed to Rice County organizations. The Northfield Historical Society received two, each amounting to almost $10,000. One will be used to digitize documents from 36 Northfield­ civic organizations, which will then be available to the public via the Northfield History Collaborative. The NHS will use the second grant to process its collections backlog.

The Rice County Historical Society also landed a $9,800 windfall to research and document the life of philanthropist Evangeline Marrs Whipple, who spent 14 years in Minnesota.
