Sen. Dahle Leads Statewide Working Group on Assessments

Sen. Kevin Dahle (D-Northfield) represents District 20.

As the point person forΒ Student Assessment and Testing on the Education Committee, I have begun the process ofΒ reviewing the State’s standardized testing environment. Minnesota continues to have one ofΒ the best track records in theΒ country for student learningΒ and achievement, but ballooning government imposition ofΒ standardized testing has begunΒ to take its toll. Minnesota students take several redundantΒ tests every year, wasting time,Β money, and often disruptingΒ their learning environment.Β  Β  Β

For years, teachers and students have grown more andΒ more concerned about the needΒ to ―teach to the test,β€– ratherΒ than to student needs. MathΒ testing in particular has becomeΒ a burden to students: a singleΒ score on a single test on a singleΒ day threatens to keep an estimated 43% of students fromΒ graduating on time in 2015.Β With Minnesota’s top-of-the-nation ACT scores, this is aΒ problem with our tests, not ourΒ students.

Along with Rep. Brynaert inΒ the House, I am working onΒ legislation to eliminate theΒ GRAD standardized test, doingΒ away with high-stakes, onechance testing. Along with that,Β I will work to establish a framework to replace the GRADΒ with a suite of tests which isΒ forward-looking, rather thanΒ reactive.Β  Β  Β This suite, aligned with ourΒ rigorous state standards, wouldΒ be designed to promote collegeΒ and career readiness, in accordance with a recent report onΒ assessment and accountability.Β

Allowing for increased communication between schools, students and parents, the newΒ testing will create a more effective learning environment. ThisΒ is a big task that will take manyΒ years to fully complete, but weΒ are on the road to a more responsible system of educationΒ that will keep Minnesota competitive in the US economy.Β That’s a goal we can all agree toΒ strive toward
