Should Northfield Start A Solar Subscription?

The Northfield City Council is currently considering whether to subscribe to community solar gardens.​ Doing so could save the city money.

NORTHFIELD, MN — Should the city of Northfield use solar power? The Northfield City Council is currently considering whether to subscribe to community solar gardens. Doing so could save the city money, as well as help the environment.

Minnesota Community Solar estimates show that Northfield could potentially save more than $1.5 million over a quarter-century under a 1,960 kilowatt subscription, Northfield News reported:

In 2013, Minnesota legislation directed Minneapolis-based utility, Xcel Energy, to create a program for community solar gardens.
A community solar garden is a centralized, shared solar project connected to the energy grid with multiple subscribers. Each subscriber receives a credit on their Xcel Energy electric bill based upon the production of solar facility and their ownership share of that facility.
