The St. Olaf Theater Department presents...
THE GLASS MENAGERIE
Written by Tennessee Williams
Directed by Lauren Bartelt ‘12 and Dona Werner Freeman

ABOUT THE GLASS MENAGERIE:
The Glass Menagerie takes place in the memory of Tom Wingfield, who tells us, “I give you the truth in the pleasant disguise of illusion.” One of the great modern classics of American theater, The Glass Menagerie is Tennessee Williams’ first success and the most autobiographical work. In it, the young playwright reveals his guilt over his fragile sister’s inability to thrive in the world outside their St. Louis home. Centered on the triangulated relationship between brother, sister and mother, the plot hinges on the arrival of the Gentleman Caller, who each hopes will extinguish what Williams calls their “implacable fire of human desperation.”

Our staging is being created in partnership with recent alumni Lauren Bartelt ‘12 as co-director and Benjamin Olsen ‘13 as scenic designer. Faculty member Dona Werner Freeman will co-direct as well as act, playing Tom’s mother, Amanda Wingfield.
