Teen Dies In Crash After Attending St. Paul Festival

The driver fell asleep and the car rolled off the roadway of I-90, authorities said.

WINONA COUNTY, MN — Gao Jer Joanne Vang, 15, of Onalaska, Wisconsin died in a crash just minutes from home June 30. She was returning from the Hmong Freedom Festival in Saint Paul.

Authorities say a 16-year-old was driving a Toyota RAV4 eastbound on Interstate 90 when he fell asleep. The car left the roadway and rolled.

Vang, a passenger in the Toyota, did not have her seatbelt on and was ejected onto the roadway before she was struck by an eastbound Ford, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. She died at the scene.

The car's three other occupants were transported to Gunderson Lutheran with non-life threatening injuries.
