Third DFL Candidate Comes Forward for District 20B

Mick McGuire, former five-term mayor of Montgomery, announced on Thursday that he'll seek the DFL endorsement for the new Minnesota House District 20B.

McGuire is the third DFLer to step forward to represent the new district, which is .

"I grew up in this area and after college returned to start a local business that is now celebrating its 25th year of successful operation," McGuire said in a press release. "During this time, I've been deeply involved with community, regional and state issues and concerns."

McGuire's experience includes 10 years at Montgomery's mayor and eight years on the council before that. He also served on the Region 9 Development Commission for 11 years.

"This history of service is something that I would like to continue as the representative for District 20B," McGuire said.

Montgomery wasn't in the same district as Northfield until the new Legislative maps were released last week and Northfied moved from District 25B to District 20B. In 2010, McGuire lost to Glenn Gruenhagen to represent District 25A. Gruenhagen carried 51 percent of the vote, while McGuire received 49 percent of the vote, according to the Minnesota Secretary of State election results.

McGuire will face off against former ,  to Republican Kelby Woodard by 37 votes, and , who is in his first term on the .

Both Bly and Ganey live in Northfield.

Because of redistricting, there is not an incumbent for District 20B. Woodard, a Republican from Belle Plaine, is now part of District 20A.

District 20B would includes Rice County's Bridgewater Township, Dennison, Dundas, Erin Township, Forest Township, Lonsdale, Northfield, Northfield Township, Shieldsville Township, Webster Township and Wheatland Township, as well as Le Sueur County's Cordova Township, Heidelberg, Kilkenny, Kilkenny Township, Lanesburgh Township, Montgomery, Montgomery Township.
