Minnesota and Montana Extension team up to provide updated information on baby’s first foods
When can my baby start eating solid foods? What food should I feed my baby first? How can I reduce the risk of peanut allergies? These are just a few of the questions parents and caregivers of babies have when it comes to starting to feed their babies solid foods. University of Minnesota Extension teamed up with colleagues at Montana State Extension creating a video series to help parents and care providers understand more about babies’ first foods.

Babies should be introduced to solids around the age of 6 months when they are developmentally ready. Watch Signs Your Baby is Ready for Solids to learn if your baby is developmentally ready to start solids.
When your baby is ready for solids, it is up to the parent or caregiver to decide what food to give your baby first. Foods should be pureed or soft to prevent choking. Introduce a single-ingredient food from any food group and then wait 3-5 days to see if the baby has any allergic reactions to the food. If the baby does not have any reactions, add another food. Because babies need iron and zinc, be sure and include iron fortified cereals and pureed meats. Watch Ready, Set, Solids to learn more about baby’s first foods.

Recent recommendations on when to introduce peanut containing foods has recently changed. It is now recommended that peanut containing foods be introduced between 4-6 months to reduce the risk of developing a peanut allergy. Talk to your child’s health care provider for more information.
