It will be up to local school superintendents to decide whether to cancel classes on Tuesday.Β
That's the word fromΒ Minnesota Education Commissioner Brenda Cassellius, speaking toΒ reportersΒ shortlyΒ after Gov. Mark Dayton announced aΒ statewide school closure on Monday.Β
"Currently we believe school districts can make that decision" about closing classes on Tuesday as well, she said. State officials will continue toΒ monitor the weather, she said,Β butΒ unless "something drastic changes"Β will leave the decisionΒ about Tuesday toΒ local districts.
TheΒ windchill warningΒ that prompted the move willΒ extendΒ through Tuesday morning.Β However,Β Monday morning will be colder than Tuesday morning. Cassellius also emphasized one factor in the choice to cancel classes on Monday wasΒ that many districts will beΒ coming off of winter break.Β
Northfield Public Schools will not hold any classes or activities Monday, however, the district has not made a decision on Tuesday. According to the district's website, that decision will not be made until Monday:
"The District is aware that forecasters are predicting continued cold weather on Tuesday, January 7th. The District will be monitoring the situation."
