Zumba for a Worthy Cause
The second Northfield Zumbathon! is planned for Saturday, Aug. 3, at Central Park. All proceeds go to the Northfield Youth Sports Collaborative's scholarship fund.
Northfield area fitness instructors are heading outdoors on Saturday to raise more money for the Northfield Youth Sports Collaborative’s scholarship fund.
The second Northfield Zumbathon! is planned for 10:30 a.m. to noon Aug. 3 at Central Park. All proceeds go to the sports collaborative.
NYSC, according to its website, “works to increase the involvement of Northfield youth in local sports associations and to overcome barriers that may prevent young people from participating.” Scholarships awarded by the collaborative allow low-income youngsters to participate in Northfield-area sports programs.

Roughly 60 people took part in the first Zumbathon! in May at Northfield High School and raised $850 for the sports collaborative.
The success of that first event prompted fitness instructors to plan a follow-up, this time outside, says Zumba instructor and event organizer Kathryn Schmidt.

“I wanted to organize this Zumbathon because I had the privilege to try many sports when I was young and eventually end up playing tennis all the way through varsity at Carleton, and I had so much support along the way from my family and my community, both financially and otherwise,” Schmidt says on her Zumba Instructor Network page. “You just learn so much through sports - teamwork, responsibility, time management, healthy habits... etc. I'm thankful to have had this opportunity to use our time and talents to extend sporting opportunities to more of this community!”
No Zumba experience is required to participate in Saturday’s event.
Suggested donation for the event is $15 per participant. Those who donate $15 receive a raffle ticket. People can receive an additional raffle ticket for every $5 donated above the $15 figure.
People can register either online or at the Northfield Community Services desk in the youth wing of the Northfield Community Resource Center.
Registration also is available the day of the event.
Check in on Saturday begins at 10:15 a.m. Childcare is available for children 2 years old and older.
In case of inclement weather, the Zumbathon! will take place in the Carleton College Weitz Center. For updates and other information about the community, join us on Patch, Like us on Facebook and follow Northfield Patch on Twitter.
