The Season of Apples

A quick essay on Apples--the fruit

There's something wonderful about apples. Their aroma and heft; the crunch of a Honeycrisp or a Sweetango, or a Keepsake; the mellow time of year they come to harvest. When there’s a cool little nip in the air; the crunch of leaves underfoot I think of apples. I love the way the springtime flower of the apple blossom is still hintingly evident in the shape and structure of an autumn apple.

I especially like the trip to the orchard. Is there any place more rustic and tempting than the showroom floor of an apple orchard full of fruit and cider and apple crisp?  Think of a converted barn filled with the aroma of the harvest, fresh brewed coffee and cocoa and busy with visitors. Feels good, doesn't it.

Apples: the last hint of—the apex of—summer. They warm and sweeten the cold of late autumn and winter. Psych up little bees! Make me more apples next spring!
