Chemistry can be a blast. Just ask Century College chemistry professors Wayne Haag and David Blackburn.
On Wednesday, Dec. 14, Haag and Blackburn will host the annual Holiday Chemistry Magic Show at 7 p.m. in the West Campus Theatre.
Free and open to the public, this annual event features about two dozen colorful activities that mix chemical elements in fiery, noisy, bubbly and sometimes explosive ways. Add flashing stage lights and exuberant music, and you have quite a show. While it’s all for fun, it does get people thinking about the scientific principles behind the activities.

Former students who are now senior scientists at corporations such as 3M make up much of the audience at the annual extravaganza. Many of these students also bring their children and spouses.
In the past, Haag, a Maplewood resident, has delighted his audience by electrocuting a pickle, creating a giant rootbeer float and launching a bottle rocket. Who knows what he will be up to this year?
