Kids Planner: Fall Season Brings Fun Family Activities

Take a train ride and watch the fall colors pass by, or go to a local apple orchard.

Here are some ideas for fun things to do with your family in the next week:

Apple Fest at Whistling Well Farm

  •  When/Where: October 8 & 9 from 9:00 a.m. to dark., 8973 South St. Croix Trail, Hastings
  • Why Go: If you are looking for a pick-your-own place that doesn’t charge admission this is the perfect one. The family-run farm has free wagons to carry your kids, apples and pumpkins. You can also dig your own mums, get in the chicken coop and pet the donkeys. Apple Fest weekend also means music by the Back Porch Band and food.
  • Geared Toward: Everyone.
  • Price: Free admission. Apples are $18 a peck (which is about 10 lbs).

Osceola & St. Croix Valley Railway

  • When/Where: 1.5 hour trips on Saturdays and Sundays (check the website for specific times) departing from Osceola.
  • Why Go: Kill two birds with one stone! Treat your kids to a trip on a real train and get your chance to view the leaves in the St. Croix Valley. Some trips include brunch or dinner. This would be a perfect outing to include grandma and grandpa.
  • Geared Toward: The whole family. 
  • Price: Varies depending on age and what type of trip.

Amazing Race 2

  • When/Where: Saturday, Oct. 15 from 10-11:30 a.m. at .
  • Why Go: A new season of Amazing Race has hit the airwaves so if it has you wanting some adventure, try this on for size. Challenges and puzzles await you and you don’t even have to spend eight hours cramped in an airplane seat.
  • Geared Toward: The whole family.
  • Price: $12 per person or $25 for a family of up to 4.  (Register by Oct. 7)

Trees & Leaves Story Hour

  • Why Go: Celebrate the leaves changing with this story time that is all about trees.

  • When/Where: Sunday, Oct. 9 at 2 p.m. at the .
  • Why Go: This classic country and variety show might be a good way to celebrate fall with your family.
  • Geared Toward: The whole family.
  • Price:  Free.
