North Football Drops Season Opener At Richfield
Polars tied 7-7 at halftime, but couldn't hang on against the Spartans.
The North St. Paul football team suffered a season-opening loss on Thursday at Classic Suburban Conference opponent , falling 27-13 on a hot and muggy evening in the southern metro.
Celebrating their first game on their new turf field, the Spartans scored the game's first points on a touchdown early in the second quarter.
However, running back Ryan Nicolai countered for the Polars, capping a scoring drive with a six-yard touchdown run to help pull the visitors even at 7-7 headed into halftime.

Yet, most of the final 24 minutes belonged to Richfield, who outscored North 20-6 in the second half to hand the Polars the inaugural loss of this autumn.
North hosts its home opener next Friday as South St. Paul—the No. 7-ranked team in Class AAAA—comes calling for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
