Key to Awesomeness: Eighth-grader Logan Johnson started learning about geography when he was 7. He started by studying the different states, and then expanded into the rest of the world.

“I just wanted to learn more and more,” he said. So much so, that the local library has few books he hasn’t already checked out, he said. Thankfully, he said, he’s got the Internet to satiate his hunger for information.

Earlier this year, Logan’s years of study paid off—he won Skyview Middle School’s geography bee, and he just completed his qualifying test to see whether he goes onto the state competition.

Either way, he’s happy and proud that he’s made it this far in the competition, he said.

In addition to geography, Logan’s favorite subjects in school are math and science. He’s considering a career as a mapmaker someday, but he’s also thinking about becoming an engineer or a politician, he said.

Through his studies in geography, he’s identified a few places in the world he’d like to see—Buenos Aires, because it’s culturally diverse, and Canada because of its vastness.

If Logan qualifies, he’ll compete against 100 other students in the state competition for a spot at nationals, where the first prize is a $25,000 scholarship.
