Key to Awesomeness: About a week before last Tuesday, another election was going on—a statewide one. Tartan High School senior Cheneng Tommy Vue, after qualifying to become a candidate, campaigned against 13 other students for one of six spots on the Minnesota Business Professionals of America executive team. After preparing a campaign booth, giving a speech and answering questions before an audience of 66 voting delegates and hundreds of Business Professionals of America members, Vue was elected to the state board as historian.

“It was a good feeling,” he said.

Vue was attracted to Business Professionals of America because he wanted to learn about business and leadership, but also because the group does so much community service, he said.

“Volunteering has always been important to me,” he said.

Tartan’s Business Professionals of America group packs meals for Feed my Starving Children, conducts blood drives, organizes a “Pennies for Patients” drive, teaches elementary school kids about how to trick-or-treat safely, and more, he said.

In part because he likes to help others, Vue said, he’s planning a career in the medical field. He said he thinks the business acumen he’s gained through Business Professionals of America will help him when he opens his own medical practice someday.

In the near future, he’s planning to attend the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, and he currently works as a teller at Western Bank.
