Oakdale Police Blotter: Residents Targeted by Scammers

Two Oakdale residents recently reported being the target of scams, however, neither fell for them, according to Oakdale Police Department reports.
On Wednesday, Aug. 17, an Oakdale man reported receiving a letter stating that he had won $90,000, according to an Oakdale Police Department report.
The letter also stated that to begin the process to get the money, he had to cash the enclosed check for $2,450 and send a money order for $1,800 back to pay taxes, according to the report.

The complainant thought the letter was a scam and turned the information over to police, the report says.
Also on Aug. 17 an 81-year-old Oakdale resident reported she got a call from a man claiming to be from FedEx, according to a police report. He said he had a $1.25 million check for her, and that he needed her to send $450, according to the report. She hung up on him and sent no money, the report says.

The following incidents were also reported to Oakdale police Aug. 17-20:
Aug. 17:
- Oakdale Police checked on information from the Eagan Police Department about a 31-year-old Cicero, IL, man who had been stealing from pawn shops by turning in fake gold necklaces for money. found that the man had pawned a gold necklace there for $900 on Aug. 4 and that it wasn't real.
- Someone smashed out the rear windshield of a vehicle parked at the between 12:15 and 1:45 p.m. They stole $100 worth of items and caused $1,000 damage between the broken window and scratched paint.
- Vandals caused $1,500 damage to the Oakdale well house located at 6830 15th St. Six lights were shot out with BBs.
- An Oakdale man mailed a check to a contractor outside , but when the envelope arrived, the check was missing. Someone had stolen the check, altered it and cashed it at a Maplewood bank. Police are investigating the theft.
Aug 18:
- Police arrested a 29-year-old Chicago man for allegedly attempting to pawn fake gold at .
Aug. 19:
- A loss prevention employee at reported that on Aug. 10 the GPS device case was left unlocked and two men stole five of the devices, worth $970.
- Oakdale police responded to Food-N-Fuel after an alarm covering the back door went off. A door to the building was found unsecure with pry marks on the surrounding brick, but entry was not gained. The owner responded and said that $500 cash and $1,590 worth of cigarettes were stolen.
- A $200 bicycle was stolen from the 6200 block of 13th Street sometime after 9:30 p.m. Aug. 18.
- An Oakdale woman reported that her debit card was fraudulently used for two online purchases totaling $676.
Aug. 20:
- Shortly after 3 a.m., a 20-year-old Oakdale man reported that he was assaulted by two to three unknown men in the 6800 block of 27th Street who left in a vehicle before police arrived. He had a bloody nose and injury to his lip, but he did not want to pursue criminal charges.
- Police arrested a man after responding to an anonymous complaint of two people breaking into a car in the 4000 block of Geneva Avenue. They determined that the woman inside the car was its owner, but found that the man, a 32-year-old from Landfall, had a warrant out for his arrest.
