Oakdale Teen Competes in State Fair Talent Contest

Bobbie Morelli, 13, competed in the state fair's amateur talent competition at the Leinie Lodge Bandshell.

Bobbie Morelli, an eighth-grader from Oakdale with no official musical training, sang Carrie Underwood’s “Undo it” in the semifinals of the Minnesota State Fair’s amateur talent competition Saturday evening.

Oakdale Patch reporter Zac Farber talked with Morelli after the competition.

Oakdale Patch: Why did you decide to sing “Undo it”?

Bobbie Morelli: I really liked the beat of it. I thought it was really catchy. Carrie Underwood’s my favorite country singer. Country’s not my favorite type of music, but I thought I’d do something different. I usually do R&B, like Alicia Keys.

Oakdale Patch: How did you get started with music?

Morelli: I started singing at my house with just my dad. Then I formed a group with my sister and her friends. The first tryout I did was at North High School. I got really excited for competition. When I was 10, I competed in the state fair and got second in the semifinals.

Oakdale Patch: What was your favorite part of the state fair?

Morelli: The talent competition! I also liked watching the band Free and Easy. We went after the competition. They were really good. I liked all the music that they played. They had Oldies music—a lot of horns. I also like eating the cheese curds.

Oakdale Patch: What did it feel like to be onstage?

Morelli: I just love being onstage. It’s fun, and I get to interact with the audience.

Oakdale Patch: Was it difficult being one of the youngest performers?

Morelli: I feel a little bit more proud of myself for making it in. I’m one of the younger of the bunch, so I had to work a little harder.
