Woodbury Leadership Academy (WLA) is a tuition-free, K-12 public charter school where high expectations and success matter to all! Our learning environment and school community promotes academic achievement for students in grades K-12, as well as personal integrity, equity and a dedication to value and serve others. Our school is committed to our students’ long term success. We use inquiry based learning by teaching the Core Knowledge Curriculum — building strong skills in math, reading, writing, history, science and technology. We also have a strong character education program to ensure students develop exceptional leadership skills. The character education program includes service learning projects and a focus of five core virtues - respect, responsibility, perseverance, gratitude and humanity. WLA uses the rigorous and classical Core Knowledge Curriculum to build strong foundational knowledge across subjects, promoting academic excellence and equity. By ensuring all students share common knowledge, we can narrow achievement gaps and build critical thinking and long-term success. WLA is a public school with a private school feeling. WLA students wear school uniforms to promote equality, reduce peer pressure, and minimize distractions. Small class sizes at WLA allow for teachers and staff to provide personalized instruction, build strong relationships, and increase student engagement. The football team escaped Friday with a 16-12 home win over <a href="http://www.classicsuburban.org/g5-bin/client.cgi?G5genie=14" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">Classic Suburban Conference</a> rival Richfield. The Titans overcame two deficits to take a 13-12 at half, and a 32-yard field goal in the third quarter by Joe Tjosvold closed out all scoring on Friday. The Spartans (1-6, 1-5 Classic Suburban Conference) took the early lead when Corban Halbur scored on a one-yard rush, but a failed extra point kept the score 6-0. Tartan responded with an eight-yard touchdown pass from Mitchel Grohs to Stacy Kalkwarf to take a 7-0 lead. In the second, Richfield again took the lead with a 24-yard touchdown pass from Halbur to Deshawn Jones, but the two-point conversion failed and the Spartans again led 12-6. Tartan responded with a two-yard run by Alan Medina-Gonzalez, and after a failed two-point conversion the Titans (4-3, 3-3) led 13-12. Tartan never looked back. Tartan's final game of the regular season is on Wednesday on the road against South St. Paul. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
