Tartan’s Burbul Commits to No. 1 Ranked Davenport University

Varsity coach Cheryl Greene said she feels Alexis Burbul's 'coachability' will serve her well at the next level.

Tartan’s 6’1" power forward Alexis Burbul late Wednesday evening officially committed to attending Davenport University in Grand Rapids, MI.

Davenport University's girls basketball team is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation for National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) schools and boasts an overall record of 29-0.

Averaging 10 points, eight rebounds and two blocks per game, Burbul is one of the top-rated power forwards in the Classic Suburban Conference.

“Davenport is just what I’ve been looking for in a college,” Burbul told Oakdale Patch. “From a basketball standpoint, they’re a great fit, both offensively and defensively.”

Burbul was first approached by a scout from Davenport University at the Hill-Murray Holiday Classic on Dec. 28.

“It was the recruiter that ultimately contacted Coach (Mark) Youngs and told him that there is a girl at Tartan that would be a perfect fit,” Burbul said after her Thursday afternoon practice.

It was only after a face-to-face meeting with the team and coaches that Burbul was able to decide that Davenport would definitely be part of her future.

“After meeting everyone and watching a few of their games, the girls seem really nice and the coaches really care about their players. I’m really excited,” Burbul said.

Tartan girls varsity basketball coach Cheryl Greene said she feels that Burbul and Davenport University make a perfect pair.

“(Alexis) is a hard worker. She’s one of those rare players that wants to develop all parts of her game,” she said. “She’s not satisfied just being an inside player. She has worked very hard to develop her outside game this year. A player like Alexis is going to do well in college basketball.”

Catch Tartan’s next game versus Henry Sibley at home on Friday, Feb. 18.
