It is another gray and snowy winter day- a day when thinking about a nice tax refund can bring a smile to any taxpayer’s face. Tax Team is grateful for the “Where’s my Refund” pages on the State and IRS websites. Here, a taxpayer with access to a computer can check the status of returns and when to expect refunds to be deposited.
You can check the status of your return 24 hours after you e-file your return or four weeks after you mail in your return. In order to access the federal information, go to IRS.gov and click on “Where’s My Refund” You will need to enter your social security number, filing status (single, etc) and the exact amount of the refund. Next, you will receive a diagram showing the status of your return: whether it has been received, approved, and if your refund is on the way. The site is updated once every 24 hours, usually overnight, so it will not help to check several times a day. The IRS has committed to have most refunds to taxpayers by 21 days after the return has been accepted. If there is a problem, the IRS cannot help you with your return until the 21-day period has past, or 6 weeks for a mail- in return.
The MN Dept of Revenue “Where’s My Refund” site is similar. You will need your social security number, type of return, the year of return and exact amount of refund to access the information. The message will tell you if the return is being processed, and later, a date by when the refund will be deposited.

Tax Team cannot emphasize enough that the easiest and quickest way to get your refund is to e-file and direct deposit. If you have already filed, give the “Where’s My Refund” sites a try. If you haven’t filed yet, be sure to e-file and direct deposit.
