From the Middle of the Pack: You Are What You Eat!

What you eat impacts how you run.

I ran my first race of the season in late April, a half marathon.  It was a personal best time for me!  I finished right in the middle of my age group, which I guess means I properly named my blog. Quite a change from last season, when I was turning in my slowest half marathon and marathon times since I started running, and was consistently at “the back of the pack”.

Why the change?  Probably the biggest reason is that I lost more than 15 lbs through the winter.  My diet has never been very good.  Too much pizza and fast food.  I knew it was impacting my running, but you have to live, right?  Well, frustration finally overcame habit.  I decided in December to start the new year by focusing on eating a much healthier diet.  Lots of fresh vegetables and lean proteins, and plenty of water.  But more importantly, I stopped eating all the junk I had previously consumed.  The results were pretty dramatic; not only did the weight come off, but I felt a lot better.  The "diet" has now become a lifestyle change.  And, I am running a LOT faster.

What's the point?  Easy.  What you eat does matter.  You may not realize it, but everything you take in has some effect on your fitness level.  Want to run faster?  If you eat better, and train hard, it will happen.
