It's the beginning of the final three summer retro films at Willow Creek 12. Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and after two years of requests it will finally be seen on the big screen, Poltergeist.

On the wagon and out of lucrative work thanks to his alcoholism and family troubles, aspiring novelist Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) accepts a position as the off-season custodian at an elegant but eerie hotel so he can write undisturbed. But shortly after Jack, his wife (Shelley Duvall) and his young son (Danny Lloyd) settle in, the ominous hotel begins to wield its sinister power in this chilling horror classic helmed by Stanley Kubrick.*

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982) August 25th 9:30pm | August 26th Midnight | August 27th 10:30am and Midnight
Admiral James T. Kirk is still in charge of a space fleet, but from behind a desk. Dr. McCoy and Mr. Spock convince him to take on a mission which sounds simple, but with the appearance of the mysterious Khan, things get a little tricky.*

Life is pleasant for the close-knit Freeling family (headed by Craig T. Nelson and JoBeth Williams) until a host of otherworldly forces invades their peaceful suburban home, transforming their house into a swirling supernatural sideshow that's centered around their angelic young daughter (Heather O'Rourke). This must-see horror classic earned two Oscar nods for its special effects and another for its haunting score.*

What film will you check out? Being the Kubrick fan that I am, I will certainly be seeing The Shining on the big screen. It's a film that is undeniably frightening for many reasons, but what will always make my skin crawl is the photography and choice of lenses; the deep focus and how lit everything is. Of course Jack Nicholson will knock your socks off too, but the openess of the photography is what gets me everytime. Even though I could technically see the film for free at Willow Creek 12, I always pay for the retro tickets. It’s only $5.50 and supporting the success of the retros makes me feel great. Speaking of Kubrick, I will give a nod to Criterions Blu-ray release of The Killing on August 16th. It’s a fantastic film and I encourage all to check it out.
