The Return of the Retros at Willow Creek

Twelve months after the Retros were originally cancelled, the Willow Creek Theatre has officially announced the return of the popular midnight series.

Twelve months after the Retros were originally cancelled, the Willow Creek Theatre in Plymouth has officially announced the return of the popular midnight series. But with the short video teaser that the theatre published on their facebook page, came a lack of details. What films will be playing? When will they return? Perhaps the theatre takes joy in teasing their fans? I certainly think they do. Here are a few answers to your questions:

 • The films will only play on Friday and Saturday evenings, but this time they’ll start up at 11:30PM instead of 12:00AM. This decision to go the earlier route should go over quite well. Lets face it, 30 extra minutes is 30 extra minutes. You can’t go wrong there.

• Each ticket will still only be $5.50

• The theatre will run a short, four film series from the middle of October to the beginning of November, take a Holiday break, then return with a second series sometime in the winter. The word is that they'll come back for series 2 in January, but the details are still being developed.

 • The films will be presented on a digital format, at 1080p. The film vs. digital topic was (and still is) a great discussion amongst hardcore film-purists, and it’s in the humble opinion of this writer that the look and texture of film will never be beat. However, the digital format will allow Willow Creek to have more access to a larger volume of films. The theatre faced obstacles when they first introduced the retros back in October 2009. Many 35mm film prints were simply not taken care of over the years by other theatres/projectionists, and due to the lack of care, some prints were not playable, therefor they were not available to rent. Sometimes the Willow projectionists would often time spend up to four hours repairing the films just so they would be able to run through the projector.

That's the extent of the information I have for you today. As for which retro titles they'll run? You’ll just have to wait and see. The theatre just may be releasing a teaser poster this weekend in their lobby. Perhaps that will give a hint?
