Plymouth City Creates Festive Winter Atmosphere
Plymouth hangs winter decorations to brighten the winter doldrums and it only costs about $1.50 a day.
As people drive through the city center in Plymouth, they’ll notice seasonal decorations speckled across the landscape. White and blue lights are draped from trees and banners, hang from light poles and create a festive atmosphere for winter.
“I think these simple touches really add some warmth to the area,” said Plymouth Deputy Director of Parks and Recreation Barb Northway. “During the winter months we lose so much daylight that it’s nice to have some seasonal lights to bring a little beauty to our drive home.”
The city’s forestry department spends about a half a day putting up white and blue lights for the season. The decorations are mostly around the city center. But there are some lighted snowflakes in Parker’s Lake Park for the city’s annual Fire and Ice Festival.

The city spends $1.50 a day to keep the estimated 50 trees lit through the winter.
“We use LED lights so they are really cost efficient,” Northway said.

Local residents like Patrice Hollow say the lights are a nice touch this time of year.
“I think it’s great that our city staff care enough about our city to keep it looking nice,” she said. “During winter they have nice lights and during the summer they really stay on top of landscaping with nice flowers and such scattered around town.”
Natalia Cretia says the decorations are simple and tasteful.
“I see the decorations all the time because we are at the Plymouth Ice Center quite a bit, and I think they are really nice,” Cretia said. “None of the decorations are tied to any one holiday and I appreciate that, they’re just a nice addition.”
The lights add a little color to the drab winter season, she said.
"I say the more the merrier,” Cretia added.
Northway said the lights will come down at the end of January or when weather permits.
