On whether he would back the Senate compromise to expand checks to online and gun show sales, Paulsen said, “I think it’s on the right track.”
“I will have to review the details. It’s absolutely on the right track. I think there are things in that compromise that gun owners are going to appreciate, like being able to move weapons across state lines that make it easier to transfer weapons within their own family and I need to look at the details but overall I think the bipartisan component is on the right track, as well,” he said.

Japan Trade
Paulsen sounded a hopeful note in an April 12, 2013 statement after completion of bilateral talks between the Obama Administration and Japan about that country joining the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP):
“Emerging markets in Asia are huge growth opportunities for Minnesota employers, workers, and farmers. ... I am hopeful that Japan’s participation and inclusion as a TPP partner will move them to address their barriers to U.S. exports, and enhance the opportunity for a successful rules-based system of trade in the Asian-Pacific region that will drive global growth and opportunity. I look forward to continuing to work with the United States Trade Representative as TPP moves forward."
