Nip it, nip it, nip it! Bud it, bud it, bud it!

Taking advice from Barney Fife, we address some misconceptions and myths about roofing and roofing contractors

If you're a certain age, or just someone who likes watching old television re-runs, you may recall an episode of the old Andy Griffith Show in which a nasty rumor is being circulated about Sheriff Andy Taylor. Deputy Barney Fife, in his tell-tale authoritative but squeaky voice, offers Andy the following advice: "You need to nip it in the bud, I tell ya'! Nip it, nip it, nip it! Bud it, bud it, bud it!" Sage advice from Deputy Fife ... so with that in mind, NMC Exteriors & Remodeling would like to address some of the rumors, or myths, associated with roofs and roofing contractors. Roofing doesn't need regular maintenance. Just like anything else in your home, your roof is not maintenance free. NMC Exteriors & Remodeling can look over your roof annually or as needed to examine the shingles, flashing and gutters. We'll diagnose and fix problems before they cause expensive damage to your home. Asphalt shingles are not durable and are all the same. Over the years, a lot of new technologies have been applied to asphalt shingles, making them more durable and longer lasting. Today you can get textured asphalt shingles to create a unique roofing pattern. Designer roofing shingles are also available in a wide range of color options that will fit your style and budget. Flashing and gutters are not part of your roof system. Flashing helps divert water away from pipes, vents, and other roof openings. As a rule, it should be inspected every 6 months. When NMC Exteriors & Remodeling conducts an inspection, some of the things we look for are dried caulking, cracked or broken flashing, and damaged shingles around the flashing. Although it is your roof that shields the house from rainwater, it is your gutters that divert water away from the exterior walls and the foundation. NMC Exteriors & Remodeling will not only inspect your gutters, we'll clean them to help avoid any water damage. Fixing small issues with an overlay of more shingles is okay. Some contractors will tell you that simply putting more asphalt shingles on top of existing damaged shingles will solve your problems. This does not fix the issue. In fact, it only helps to hide the problem and allow it to get worse over time . Any homeowner or handyman can fix a roof. Roof repairs require knowledge, expertise, and proper safety equipment. Without these, you can’t be sure that you’ve handled your roofing problem entirely and you risk your own safety. NMC Exteriors & Remodeling is licensed and insured and prides itself on keeping its employees up-to-date with training on new methods and technologies. We ALWAYS put the safety of your home, your family, and our employees first. Some things are best left to the experts ... that's especially true when it's your roof.
