WCCO: Plymouth Ranks #11 in Twin Cities for Speeding Tickets Issued Per Capita

Plymouth police wrote the 11th-highest number of speeding tickets per capita among cities in the Twin Cities metro area, according to a report on WCCO-TV.

That year, Plymouth police wrote 5,075 tickets for excessive speed. The top three locations in the city of 71,561 residents:

• County Road 9/I-494 (414 citations issued)
• County Road 9/Hwy 169 (411 citations issued)
• County Road 6/I-494 (348 citations issued)

Rankings for nearby police departments: Wayzata (3), Medina (5), Golden Valley (18), Crystal (35), and Maple Grove (63).

According to the WCCO-TV report, speeding tickets aren't a money-maker for local police departments, even in No. 1-ranked Edina: 

Go over the posted speed and it’s up to each department to decide what to do. There are no state standards and police departments don’t set quotas. That’s illegal in Minnesota. When departments do issue tickets, those cities don’t make much money, only about $10 to $20. Most of the money goes to the state and county.

“It’s a loser money-wise. If I could get rid of it I would but I can’t,” Edina Police Chief Jeff Long said.
