GoFundMe Page Established for Mom of Slain 5th and 8th Grade Richfield Students

A Minneapolis shooting Friday killed two young Richfield students and one man, and sent one woman to the hospital. The case is being investigated as a domestic homicide.

Richfield officials identified the two teens who were killed as Nahily Ronquillo, a 5th grade student at the Richfield Dual Language School and her brother, Luis Ronquillo, an 8th grade student at Richfield Middle School.

The mother of the teens, Maria Romero, was admitted to the Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC).

The GoFundMe page was set up "to cover expenses related to the recovery of Maria Romero," who "lost her two children to death in the same tragic incident."

A total of $6,701 of a $50k goal has been raised so far.

The page says that Romero does not have close relatives in Minnesota.

"It is why we are supporting her, as close friends, to cover medical expenses and get a Humanitarian Visa to bring her sister to MN and to be near her in these difficult times."

After the shooting, Richfield Schools Superintendent Steven Unowsky and School Board Chair Peter Toensing told parents and students of the incident in a letter:

We learned that two of our students died after a shooting incident in South Minneapolis. Nahily Ronquillo, a 5th grade student at RDLS and her brother, Luis Ronquillo, an 8th grade student at RMS. Additionally, their mother, Maria Romero, a former RDLS employee, was hospitalized due to injuries from the same situation.All of us in Richfield Public Schools extend our deepest sympathies to the Ronquillo family and friends. Because of our close school community, this death touches everyone at our two schools and many within the district.

Minneapolis police officers from the Third Precinct responded to 5400 block of 34th Avenue South regarding the sound of gunshots coming from inside an apartment at 7:10 a.m.

When officers arrived at the apartment complex, they went inside and located four people who had been shot. Officers provided medical care to the victims until paramedics from HCMC.

Paramedics determined three people inside the apartment were deceased; one adult male, one teenage male, and one teenage female, according to a news release.

Paramedics also transported an adult female, later identified as Maria Romero, to HCMC with significant injuries.

Investigators are at the scene speaking with anyone who may have information regarding the shooting. Minneapolis Police Department Chaplains were also at the scene to talk with officers and residents of the building.

The Minneapolis Police Department is not looking for any suspects in connection with this case, and they say there is no further threat to the public's safety related to this incident.
