Memorial Day 2017: Fort Snelling And National Cemetery

Over Memorial Day Weekend 2017, visitors can explore the grounds of Historic Fort Snelling or visit the Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

RICHFIELD, MN — Over Memorial Day Weekend, visitors can explore the grounds of Historic Fort Snelling, as well as talk costumed interpreters and discover the fort's history. Topics include Native American history, the fort's role in U.S. expansion, as well as African Americans at Fort Snelling, including Dred and Harriet Scott. Enjoy demonstrations like cannon firings, hearth cooking, blacksmithing and more. Children can participate in the History Scavenger Hunt.

Topic schedule:

  • Saturday: U.S. expansion during the 1800s
  • Sunday: The 20th century and growth of the U.S. into a global power
  • Monday: Living timeline of America's military past

Fort Snelling National Cemetery Memorial Day Program

Guests may also visit the Fort Snelling National Cemetery, located at 7601 34th Avenue, South Minneapolis, MN 55450. Ceremony: May 29 at 9:45 a.m. in the Cemetery at the Intersection of Mallon Road and Peck Avenue.

  • 10:00 a.m. (Parade and Ceremony)
  • Memorial Day Address: Command Sergeant Major (Retired) Douglas L. Julin
  • Program is held at the intersection of Peck Avenue and Mallon Road

The program is supported by an ASL Interpreter.

Cemetery Memorial Day Special Weekend Hours

  • Friday, May 26: All Cemetery Gates will close at 8:30 p.m.
  • Saturday and Sunday May 27-28: Cemetery Main Gate opens at 6:00 a.m., All Gates close at 8:30 p.m.
  • Monday, May 29: Cemetery Main Gate opens at 6:00 a.m.
