Richfield Police Overwhelmed by Speed Violators on HW 77

Police say because of the high number of violators​, they did not stop vehicles going less than 15 mph over the speed limit.

Richfield, MN – If you were going 14 mph over the speed limit on Highway 77 Friday, chances are you weren't pulled over, despite police from the surrounding area enforcing the limit.

Police say because there was such a high number of egregious violators, they did not stop vehicles going less than 15 mph over the speed limit.

Friday's speed enforcement zone was a part of Minnesota's Toward Zero Deaths initiative. For these events, officers from surrounding agencies gather to enforce a specific law. In this case, it was speeding.

"Due to the high volume of violators, officers did not stop vehicles going less than 15 mph over the speed limit and most were going more than 15 over the posted limit of 55 mph," read a post on the Richfield Police Department Facebook page.

"Between noon and 3 pm, a total of 38 vehicles were stopped with the highest speed stopped being 84 mph. Speed is a factor in approximately 1 out of 5 traffic deaths annually. Please SLOW down people."
