Nationwide Illuministas Contest. This fall contestants all over the country uploaded their Wella Illumina Color creation photos on Wella’s Facebook page. There voters picked their favorites from a photo gallery.
Erika says it was a bit of a process coming up with her entry. “After hours of consulting, finding out the perfect ratios of reds and golds, I created a candy apple red hue with hints of brighter dimensional pieces for my model, Kiah,” Erika explains. “The overall look has spunk and edge.

As for the cut, I loved the natural texture Kiah had and wanted to maintain some of that when working with her new cut. I have always been a fan of clean, precise lines (very "Vidal Sassoonesque") and wanted to showcase that in the detail work around her hairline. The top
was left longer, giving her a lot of versatility and femininity to the hair”.
Wella Professionals recently launched ILLUMINA Color, which is a new translucent permanent hair color line in 20 shades of sheer tones. Erika says the color is vibrant without the all the damage. “The color is almost transparent, taking high lift blondes to the next level and taking deep sultry brunettes up a notch. It gives a beautiful iridescence to the hair with 20% less cuticle damage. Illumina is a game changer when it comes to how we use hair color. It results in natural, shiny colored hair… what all our clients ask for.”
As the grand prize winner of the Illuministas Contest, Erika receives a 4-day/3 night trip to New York City in February to go behind the scenes with Wella’s Artistic Director Eugene Souleiman’s Team at NYC Fashion Week. Erika will also receive $500 in spending cash an exclusive Wella Illumina Color education and her winning color formula published in a future Wella color formulation guide!
“We’re so proud of Erika,” says Jim Koktavy, Owner of root salon in St. Paul and Linden Hills.
“Erika is fresh out of school and already so talented and eager to learn. I’m proud that like Erika,
all of our stylists make education a priority. Winning awards for that pursuit is an added bonus.
Of course you can’t beat a trip to NYC Fashion Week now can you?!”
Erika is not the first root intern to take the top prize at a national competition. Root’s Katie Hornick just won first place representing Proctor and Gamble in a National competition with 7 teams of young stylists. Katie and her team also made the cover of “First Chair” Magazine.

You may ask yourself why the name root?
To truly represent who we are, we must under-stand who you are; and to do that we must start at the beginning--the root.
