Bakdash, of Roseville, Sentenced to 40 Years for Second-Degree Murder

Timothy Bakdash, the Roseville man who fatally struck a U of M student with his car, was sentenced to 40 years in prison.

Timothy Bakdash, the Roseville-native who fatally struck 23-year-old University of Minnesota senior Benjamin Van Handel with his car last April, was sentenced this morning to 40 years in prison, the Star Tribune is reporting.

After a night of drinking at the Library Bar and a parking lot dispute on April 15, Bakdash drove his car into a group of U of M students, killing Van Handel and injuring three.

At Bakdash’s sentencing, Van Handel's friends and family members wore T-shirts printed with a "B" for Benjamin and the dates of his birth and death, according to the Star Tribune.

Van Handel’s mother, Ann, told reporters she felt that justice had been served.

β€œBecause I feel like he won't have the things that Ben won't have,” she said.
