First Frost Could Arrive in Roseville Early Sunday Morning

Get ready to protect those plants.

The first frost of the season for Roseville and the rest of the Twin Cities could arrive early Sunday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

The agency has issued a freeze watch from 1 a.m. to 8 a.m. Sunday for all of central and southern Minnesota.  

A “cold dome of high pressure” will move in behind a cold front Friday, according to the weather service. That will create clear skies and calm winds Saturday night, which will allow temperatures to fall as low as the mid-20s outside urbanized areas.

In the urban core, temperatures will likely be in the mid-30s, but frost is possible even if temperatures don’t dip below freezing.

A freeze watch means low temperatures that could kill crops and sensitive vegetation are possible.

By coincidence, the cold weather is arriving right with the official start of fall. Saturday is the "autumnal equinox"—when the sun shines directly on the equator and night and day are almost exactly equal.
